About Us

Tax Specialists Who Understand Both Sides of the Tasman

We're not your typical accounting firm. We're tax specialists first, business advisors second, with deep expertise across both New Zealand and Australian jurisdictions.

Our Story

Lateral Advisory evolved from Lloyd-West Tax & Advisory (LWTA), a practice built on hands-on experience with New Zealand businesses of all shapes and sizes — from tradies and sole traders to growing companies with complex structures.

We're a fully remote practice registered in Auckland, working with NZ businesses nationwide. NZ-qualified with genuine trans-Tasman experience, we understand both tax systems in practice. For businesses operating across the ditch, that means one advisor who gets both sides.

We built Lateral Advisory because tax advice should be proactive, not reactive. Every business deserves a specialist who understands the real challenges of running a company — and who'll tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear.

Why “Lateral”?

The name reflects how we think. Lateral thinking: approaching problems from unexpected angles, finding solutions others miss. In tax and advisory, the obvious answer is rarely the best one. We dig deeper, question assumptions, and find the structure, deduction, or strategy that makes a real difference to your bottom line.

It also speaks to our position, literally lateral to the Tasman. We sit across both sides of the ditch, with genuine expertise in New Zealand and Australian tax law. For business owners operating in either jurisdiction (or both), that cross-border perspective is where we add the most value.

And there's a third meaning: lateral movement. We don't just help you stay compliant. We help you move sideways into better structures, smarter strategies, and stronger positions. Growth isn't always about going up. Sometimes the smartest move is lateral.

Cross-Border Expertise

Meet Jono

The person behind Lateral Advisory.

J

Jono is a qualified accountant who also holds the distinction of being enrolled as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand, though he doesn't practise as a lawyer. After exploring both paths, he chose to focus where he could make the biggest impact: helping business owners navigate the intersection of tax, trust law, company law, and commercial structuring.

It's a rare combination. Most accountants don't have legal training. Most lawyers don't understand tax. Jono sits at the crossroads, which means when he advises on a trust structure, an entity setup, or a complex tax position, he's drawing on a depth of understanding that goes beyond the numbers.

NZ-qualified with hands-on experience across both jurisdictions, Jono bridges the Tasman with genuine expertise — not guesswork. He knows the traps, the opportunities, and the nuances that most advisors miss.

Whether it's cleaning up years of messy accounts, finding tax savings your previous accountant missed, structuring a cross-border operation, or helping you plan for the next stage of growth, Jono is the kind of advisor who genuinely cares about getting you the best result.

Our Approach

Four principles that guide everything we do.

01

Proactive, Not Reactive

We flag issues before they become problems. You shouldn’t find out about a tax obligation the week it’s due.

02

Specialist, Not Generalist

We go deep on tax, property, and trusts. Specialist knowledge means better outcomes — not surface-level advice.

03

Technology-Forward

Xero, cloud-based tools, and AI-powered insights. We use technology to work smarter and give you real-time visibility.

04

Transparent Pricing

No surprises, no hourly billing anxiety. You know exactly what you’re paying and what you’re getting.
